Georgia Code §19-6-1 says alimony may be awarded to either spouse when legally available based on the needs of one spouse and the other spouse’s ability to pay. The statute authorizes alimony but does not require an award in every case. [1]
Georgia Code §19-6-5 lists amount factors including the marital standard of living, marriage length, age and health, financial resources, education or training needs, contributions to the marriage, separate estate, earning capacity, fixed liabilities, and other equitable factors. [2]

Georgia law can bar alimony when the requesting spouse’s adultery or desertion caused the separation.
Georgia Code §19-6-1 states that a spouse is not entitled to alimony if it is established by a preponderance of the evidence that the separation was caused by that spouse’s adultery or desertion.
